文字编辑是一个简易的文字处理器（word processor）以及文件编辑器（text editor），首次出现在 NeXT's NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP系统上。目前除了支持苹果公司（Apple Inc.）开发的Mac OS X操作系统，另外以 GNUstep的形式存在unix兼容操作系统上，像是 Linux。
文字编辑取代了早期麦金塔计算机上的SimpleText。文字编辑可读取的文件格式包括Rich Text Format、Rich Text Format Directory以及纯文字文件。
