王翼弃兵的理念是白方在开局时就攻击对方的中心兵。于19世纪风极一时。20世纪初期，由于黑方防御技术的深入研究，其使用者开始减少。20世纪中后期后，特级大师水平的棋局中基本不用这种开局了。

根据黑方第2步的着法，分为

  • 接受王翼弃兵
  • 拒绝王翼弃兵
  • 法尔克别尔反弃兵

等等。
