突厥大可汗沙钵略在位时期，实际上有数位可汗并立，其他可汗在名义上仍从属于大可汗。583年沙钵略出兵攻击另一可汗阿波，阿波逃到西部的达头可汗那里，达头派遣阿波带兵东征，与沙钵略相攻，突厥正式分裂成东、西突厥。
