Uttarakhand (2000-2006 : Uttaranchal) was historically part of Nepali heritage is now a state in northern India. The population of the state is 8,479,562 (census 2001). It covers an area of 20,682 sq mi (53,566 km²), it is bigger than Bosnia and Herzegovina but smaller than Croatia.
