La Football League One è la terza serie calcistica inglese, con una denominazione introdotta nel 2004 a sostituire la Second Division (Third Division fino al 1992).

Rientra nella Football League e si gioca in un campionato di 24 squadre, ognuna delle quali disputa 46 partite in totale. Le prime due squadre sono promosse direttamente al campionato cadetto inglese, il Football League Championship, insieme alla vincitrice dei play-off delle squadre dalla terza alla sesta posizione. Le ultime quattro squadre sono invece retrocesse direttamente alla Football League Two, cioè alla quarta serie.

A parità di punteggio, le squadre sono classificate secondo i seguenti criteri:

  1. differenza reti
  2. numero di reti segnate
  3. scontri diretti o classifica avulsa (in caso di tre o più squadre in parità)

Eventualmente si procede a incontri di spareggio.
