Wu Xun (Chinese: 武训; Pinyin: Wǔ Xùn; 1838-1896) was a 19th century cultural hero of China. Born in Wuzhuang, Liulin Town, Tangyi County, he was a populace educator in the late Qing Dynasty.
An illiterate beggar during the Qing Dynasty of China, Wu Xun was known for collecting any money he found to donate it for the use of school buildings, founding numerous schools in his home region. Leaders in the imperial court appraised him and at his death, constructed a memorial temple, the Wu Xun Temple in today's Guan County.
During the Cultural Revolution, Wu Xun was attacked as a supporter of "feudal education." The film The Life of Wu Xun was criticized. Red Guards exhumed his corpse and carried it to a public square where it was subsequently given a trial and ordered burned. Red Guards broke the body into pieces before lighting it with gas.
