Vector graphics markup language

A vector graphics markup language is a markup language that describes an image at a higher level than a bitmap — in terms of lines, curves, and other vector graphics primitives.

The list of vector graphics markup languages includes

• HPGL, introduced on Hewlett-Packard plotters, but generalized into a printer language
• PostScript and Encapsulated PostScript, page description language with strong graphics capabilities
• Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM/WebCGM)
• DrawingML
• Myv vector format
• the POV-Ray markup language
• Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG)
• Vector Markup Language (VML)
• Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML)
• X3D
• ReGIS, used by DEC computer terminals

Like other markup languages, vector graphics markup languages can be edited in two ways:

• by hand with a text editor, such as notepad
• graphically in a more-or-less WYSIWYG environment, such as Inkscape

A page description language can be used as a kind of vector graphics markup language.

Some vector graphics markup languages use even higher-level descriptions than lines and simple curves -- splines, text strings, iterated function systems, superquadratic ellipsoids, etc.
