Unreal Championship, or UC is a first-person shooter video game co-developed by Epic Games and Digital Extremes. It was published by Infogrames and released on November 12, 2002 for the Xbox. Unreal Championship is essentially a console version game of the PC-based Unreal Tournament 2003, developed specifically to take advantage of Xbox Live, Microsoft's online gaming service. In 2003 Unreal Championship was added to Microsoft's "Platinum Hits" line of Xbox games. It was followed in 2005 by Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict also for Xbox.

Plot

Over a century has passed since Liandri Corporation first began the Tournaments, and while the tradition lives on much has changed in the world around it…

Seventy years ago an invasion fleet appeared in human space, wiping out virtually all resistance before it could begin. Humanity, a race that had taken pride in its freedom suddenly found itself bound by the shackles of an ancient race vastly superior in numbers and technology.

The Empire quickly established a foothold among the worlds of its latest acquirement, using propaganda and brute force where necessary. Those who swore allegiance to the Emperor found that life wasn't so different under the new rule, and for some it even improved. But for those who would not kneel before their new rulers, death awaited them on the prison planets scattered across the sectors.

The Emperor and his counsel, at first repulsed by the idea of the tournaments, soon began to see the advantage of providing the populace with a form of entertainment that both enraptured the viewers and reminded them where disobedience would lead them.

Arena worlds were picked from the harshest of the prison planets, and the training began. People who had watched the Liandri Tournaments with savage glee found themselves on the arena floors fighting for their lives again and again, as the alien technology ripped them back from the brink of death until their minds finally collapsed under the strain.

Examples were made of the more vocal dissidents, each broken and remade in the image of the darkest nightmares, to show the scorn the Emperor felt for the weaklings who opposed him. Not all the participants took part unwillingly. A race of beings previously unknown slaughtered the new combatants with reckless abandon, taking pride in the ease at which they butchered the new meat. For all they cheered during each battle, every time another human died the spirit of the men and women who watched grew weaker.

Now that the Tournaments have become a fixture of the Empire's power, the aristocracy has begun to take part as well, in carefully orchestrated battles that pose no real danger to their lives. Unlike their prisoners, these Highborn can not use the resurrection technology so readily available, without losing their status as ones tainted by madness. To kill a Highborn is to kill him forever.

The only hope for mankind is that a champion will rise from the ashes of their civilization and succeed against all odds, to hold the Emperor's life in their hands.

Game modes

  • Deathmatch
  • Team deathmatch
  • Capture the flag
  • Double Domination — In Double Domination both teams must control two points on the map for ten seconds in order to score. A point can be taken by walking into its symbol, A or B. NPCs can be ordered to go to a certain point.
  • Survival — 1 vs 1 deathmatch with more players than usual. As each round ends, the losing player is made to join a queue of spectators while the winner remains in the game until killed. The winner is the first player to reach a predetermined score.
  • Bombing RunUnreal-style football where the player's team must score by placing the ball in the enemy force's goal. The bombing gun regenerates health as the offensive player moves, giving him additional lifespan to reach the enemy goal. Once the enemy goal is reached, the offensive player can run into it to score seven points for their team. Shooting the bomb into the enemy goal earns three points.

Weapons

  • Translocator - Allows the user to translocate themselves with the discs it shoots, the translocator can also kill any opponent by translocating beneath them. Such an act is called telefragging.
  • Shield Gun - A combination of a shield to parry rounds of unfriendly fire and a combat weapon that when charged releases large amounts of physical damage, launching an opponent away.
  • Assault Rifle - A basic rifle equipped with grenades, lacking any substantial firepower.
  • Bio Rifle - The "goop gun" which releases bio waste. The alternative fire prepares a large load of goop which can be used at a temporary mine-like blob; when used correctly, it can score a one-hit KO.
  • Shock Rifle - A much more powerful rifle emitting blue shock beams, while the alternative fire releases a slow moving ball of energy. When used in tandem with the primary fire, a large explosion takes place, which is very effective in slaying opponents.
  • Link - Unleashing green particles, the link gun is useless unless used in a team. The link gun can be linked, hence its name, via secondary fire. By using the link beam and shooting a teammate who is also using the link gun, the damage of the key link gun user is dramatically increased.
  • Minigun - Your standard rapid fire machine gun. The secondary fire produces a slightly faster firing rate with reduced accuracy. A general tip in using the minigun is to always tap the trigger, so the minigun stays "primed," reducing the time it needs to start up to release carnage.
  • Flak Cannon - A cross between a shotgun and a cannon, the Flak Cannon can be extremely lethal in close proximity. In Unreal Tournament, the secondary fire (the cannon ball) has a friendly smiley face on the front.
  • Rocket Launcher - A weapon that shoots rockets(hence the name). The rocket launcher can fire up to three rockets at a time if loaded with the secondary fire, and can lock on an opponent.
  • Lightning Gun - A form of sniper rifle, the lightning gun causes a wealth of damage. However, it takes a fair amount of time to reload. Nonetheless, a head shot with the lightning gun almost ensures a frag.
  • T.A.G Rifle / Ion Cannon - The T.A.G. sends a beam to a satellite to initiate a nuclear strike, killing anyone within the immediate radius of about twenty yards of the strike.

Differences between UT2003 and Unreal Championship

This list shows the differences and changes made between the PC and console version:

Unreal Championship

  • Unreal Championship begins and ends with different full-motion videos to UT2003.
  • Player must defeat his/her team in order to be the championship winner.
  • Characters from different species have slightly different statistics (jumping height, speed, health, etc.)
  • Characters in the game have different names to those in UT2003.
  • Force feedback support.
  • Some visual features have been removed or scaled back in Unreal Championship, such as certain transparent surfaces.
  • Reduced sound quality.
  • No Redeemer

Unreal Tournament 2003

  • Additional characters.
  • Wider range of playable characters.
  • Scalable graphics, supporting much higher visual quality than Unreal Championship.
  • Player must defeat Malcolm in order to be the winner of the tournament.
  • Other gun models (not all).

Changes from Unreal Tournament

Unreal Championship and Unreal Tournament 2003 added a number of features to the gameplay of their predecessor, such as:

  • An Adrenaline Meter, which the player can fill by picking up pill-shaped adrenaline powerups or achieving objectives.
  • Unreal Engine 2.0, allowing for larger maps, more detailed physics and better looking graphics.
  • Class selection of different rosters and species.
  • Unique abilities for each character.

Adrenaline

Adrenaline allows the player to temporarily augment their own abilities. To be used, adrenaline meter must have been filled by achieving objectives (such as killing enemies or capturing the enemy flag) or collecting adrenaline powerups. There are four abilities the player can select from:

  • Berserk: increases the players speed, damage and defense.
  • Invisibility: turns the player partially invisible. This is not full invisibility, but only allows the players skin to be transparent so others can't see them easily.
  • Heal: gradually increases the players health up to its limit. Once health is at 100%, it increases the player's shield armour. This can only happen if there is enough adrenaline left.
  • Agility: gives the player the ability to move a lot faster. Only provides increased movement if there is enough adrenaline left.

Clan Activity

Unreal Championship is referred to as the birthplace for many of today's top online gaming clans on Xbox Live.[citation needed] The CTF and Bombing Run game modes required heavy teamwork and communication among the players, who saw that the best place to find these things were in clans. Online recruitment in the public forums of the Xbox webpage led to immense competition between these clans and their respective members.

Trivia

  • The Xbox version was the first ever console game to receive a downloadable patch. The patch was created in response to performance issues during gameplay.
  • Many fans confuse the plot of Unreal Tournament 2003 with that of Unreal Championship, due to the two games' similarity. Due to the fact that Unreal Tournament 2004 makes the former of the two canon, that Unreal Championship 2 has nothing in common with the first game aside from the name and that UC is allegedly played somewhere after 2390 (featuring 2302's technological level, which is obviously impossible), this makes UC's plot non-canon.
