The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (also known as UW-Green Bay, UWGB or GB) is a public university located in Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA. It is part of the University of Wisconsin System.

UW–Green Bay, founded in 1965, originally had an environmental emphasis, but now offers a wide array of degrees. It is unusual among Wisconsin's public universities in not having a football team, based on advice from Vince Lombardi citing high costs and the fact that the city already hosted the Green Bay Packers.[citation needed]

Students

In 2007, student enrollment was approximately 6,100, including 5,878 undergraduate students. [1]. The freshman average ACT score was 22.6, with a high school GPA of 3.36. In Fall of 2009, student enrollment was approximately 6,200. The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is a participant in Wisconsin's Growth Agenda, created by Governor Jim Doyle. Under the Growth Agenda, enrollment is expected to reach approximately 7,500 students. [2]

Campus

Around the university is the Cofrin Memorial Arboretum, with several miles of walking and bicycling trails. Pets and camping are both prohibited on the trails. The Shorewood Golf Course, a university operated 9-hole golf course, is open to students, faculty, staff, and the public.

Weidner Center for the Performing Arts

Weidner Center

The University is home to the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts, which hosts entertainers and serves as a venue for artistic events. The Green Bay Symphony Orchestra also performs at the Weidner Center. The Weidner has a main performance hall that can seat more than 2,000, and a number of other smaller theaters. The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay student theater program also holds its performances at the Weidner Center.

Kress Events Center

Opened in early 2007, the Kress Events Center seats approximately 4,000 and is the home of the University of Wisconsin Green Bay Phoenix women's volleyball and basketball teams, who had previously played in the Phoenix Sports Center. The Kress Center has hosted nationally known figures such as the musical bands Switchfoot and Reliant K.

Activities

Phlash TV, a student-run TV station, won nine student awards in 2006 and 2007 from the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association. This was the most of any school in the state. In February 2008 Phlash TV brought home five awards, including three first place awards, again the most of any school in Wisconsin in the TV category.

Athletics

UW-Green Bay is an NCAA Division I school, and is a member of the Horizon League.

The UW-Green Bay women's basketball team has won or tied for the Horizon League regular-season championship nine times, including the last eight years.[3] They have been to the NCAA tournament eight times, including four of the last five years. They have also made two appearances in the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT).

The team received its first national ranking in 2003, when it was ranked as high as #16 in both the Associated Press poll and the Coaches' Poll. In 2005, they also received a national ranking and a bid to the NCAA Tournament, but were knocked out in the first round by the University of Maryland, College Park. In 2006, they appeared in the WNIT, where they lost to Iowa State University in a first-round game. Their most recent win in the NCAA Tournament came in 2007, when they were seeded #9 and defeated the University of New Mexico in the first round before falling to top-seeded University of Connecticut in the second round. That loss ended their school record and nation-leading 26-game winning streak.

The UW-Green Bay softball team claimed its first Horizon League tournament championship in 2005 after being picked to finish last in the conference. They went on to the national tournament, where they defeated #6 seed Oregon State University in the first round.
