The Untold Story (traditional Chinese: 八仙飯店之人肉叉燒包) is a 1993 Hong Kong crime-thriller film directed by co-star Danny Lee and Herman Yau and starring Anthony Wong. The movie is allegedly based on a true crime that took place in 1985 Macau.

The film was followed up by two unrelated sequels with The Untold Story 2, featuring Wong returning in a supporting role, and The Untold Story 3 with Lee in another supporting role.

Plot

Wong Chi Hang (Anthony Wong) is the owner of a restaurant called the Eight Immortals, a local joint where the main delicacy is Chinese pork buns. Desperate to unload his restaurant and secure the cash, Wong is also harboring some terrible secrets. He's actually a wanted criminal who escaped Hong Kong in the late 1970s after murdering someone over a debt. But what's worse is the owner before Wong has disappeared along with his entire family without a trace. Meanwhile, rotten human remains have washed up on a beach which have the cops speculating whom they may belong to, eventually traced back to the Eight Immortals restaurant. While they may very well be clumsy at their job, the police are onto Wong through their superior Officer Lee (co-director Danny Lee), who thinks Wong has more to tell than just his horrific crime years ago.

Reception

Category III Rating

In Hong Kong, due to its explicit and disturbing depictions of sex and violence involving the Wong Chi Hang character, The Untold Story was awarded a Category III rating (Persons Aged 18 and Above Only), the equivalent of the United States' NC-17 or X-ratings.

Awards

The Untold Story won its only nomination, with Anthony Wong winning his first award for Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards.
