John Blackwell (born September 9, 1973) is a contemporary R&B , Funk, Jazz, Fusion, and Pop drummer, best known for his work with Prince.[1]
John grew up in Columbia, South Carolina and started playing drums at age 3, learning from his father John Blackwell Sr a drummer himself who also played with artist such as Mary Wells, King Curtis, Joe Simon , JJ Jackson , The Drifters and many others. As a teen John jr. played in both his high-school marching and jazz bands. John also played in Jazz clubs from age 13 until he graduated from high school. At age 17 John played his first big high profile show with legend Billy Eckstine. After high school John attended Berklee College of Music (class of 95). From 1995 til present, John has played with many of today's Pop , Funk ,Hip Hop, Jazz Fusion stars. John also played at the 2008 Buddy Rich Memorial Concert. He has endorsements from Tama drums, Zildjian cymbals and sticks (after a long cooperation with Sabian and Vater, he just moved to Zildjian).
John has played with superstars like Prince , Justin Timberlake, Cameo, Patti Labelle, Utada Hikaru, P Diddy, Charlie Singleton, and many others.
John is releasing his first Debut cd in December 2009 called THE JOHN BLACKWELL PROJECT.
