Cephissus (Greek Κηφισσός: Kifissós, Kēphissós, or Kêphissos) or Cephisus (Greek Κηφῑσός: Kēphîsos) is the name of several rivers in Greece.
Cephissus was also a man changed into a sea monster by Apollo. He was the father of Melaina, Kleodora and Corycia, the Corycian nymphs. Names ending in the -ssos/-ttos suffix are thought to have Pre-Greek, or non-Indoeuropean, etymology, making it likely that the "Kēph-" root is related to rivers.
