Military ranks

  • Captain (land), an army, air force or marine rank with a NATO code of OF-2, and the equivalent in other military and paramilitary services
  • Captain (naval), a naval rank with a NATO code of OF-5, and the equivalent in other naval services (e.g., coast guard)

In specific countries

  • Captain (Canadian army and air force), a rank used by the Canadian Army and Air Force
  • Ship-of-the-Line Captain, Canadian naval rank equal to a colonel of the Army or Air Force
  • Captain (United Kingdom), a rank in the British armed forces used by two separate rank grades
  • Captain (United States), a rank in each of the seven federal uniformed services (not all equivalent)
    • Captain (U.S. Army), a rank in the U.S. Army above a first Lieutenant below a Major. Pay grade O3.

    • Captain (USPHCC), a rank in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps equal to a colonel of the Army, Marines or Air Force. Pay grade O6.
    • Captain (NOAA), a rank in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Corps equal to a colonel of the Army, Marines or Air Force. Pay grade O6.

  • Captain General, is a high military rank and a gubernatorial title.
  • Captain Lieutenant, a rank in the Russian Navy, Red Fleet/Soviet Navy and previously Imperial Russian Navy, a rank in the German Navy, and a former rank in the British army
  • Captain of the fleet, would assist an admiral with ten or more ships to command
  • Group Captain, an air force rank with a NATO code of OF-5
  • Flag captain, Royal Navy term for the captain of an admiral's flagship
  • Post-Captain, an obsolete alternative form of the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy
  • Kapitän, traditional shorted version of several ranks in the German navy, ranging from Kapitänleutnant to Kapitän zur See
