The CERT Coordination Center was created by DARPA in November 1988 after the Morris worm struck. It is a major coordination center in dealing with internet security problems.
The CERT/CC is run by the federally funded Pittsburgh based Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University. The SEI also created the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) and the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI).
The CERT/CC differs from the (US-CERT), however the two organizations do work closely together and cross reference each other.
