Karl Benz followed his successful three-wheeled Patent Motorwagen—which was patented as the first commercially available automobile on January 29, 1886 and put into production from 1886 through 1893—with the four-wheeled Benz Velo model of 1894. The Benz Velo and the Duryea Motor Wagon, patented in 1895, are credited as the first standardized cars—134 identical Benz Velos were built in 1895.

The Velo also inspired numerous copies, including Marshall (later Belsize) in Manchester,[1] Star (Wolverhampton),[2] and Arnold (Paddock Wood, of which only twelve were built).[2]
