BET International Inc was given a license to broadcast in the UK in May 2007 by Ofcom. In 2006 it was announced that BET would hold its first annual Hip-Hop Awards and as part of the announcement they also stated there would be a "Best UK Artist" category, the winner being Sway [4].
As of 20 January 2008 BET UK started testing on digital satellite on the following frequency: Eurobird 1 at 28.5E 11307 V. The test was showing an audio feed of the US channel MSNBC with the caption 'BET Test, Arqiva Washington, DC'
From 29 January 2008 this test became Bars and Tone and was only viewable by a Free To Air Digital Box (Non Sky Box).
On 11 February 2008 the test again became viewable on a Sky box and was showing EPG data for the channel.
On 19 February 2008 BET commenced full video testing
BET launched on the Sky platform on February 27 2008. One day earlier than originally advertised. It began with various BET content, such as 106 & Park, American Gangster and College Hill. The channel is available on Sky channel 191 and a +1 channel is available on Sky Channel 198 to all Sky subscribers and, since August 2008, on Freesat channel 140. BET+1 was added to Freesat when it launched, in late 2008. [5].
On September 24 2008 tests appear for BET on Virgin TV but the channel did not launch.
On 1 July 2009, BET launched a temporary HD channel, simulcasting BET UK, to cover the BET Awards [6] which are scheduled to be shown in the UK on Saturday 4th July.
