AFI's 100 Years…100 Laughs
Part of the AFI 100 Years… series, AFI's 100 Years…100 Laughs is a list of the top 100 comedy movies in American cinema. The list was unveiled by the American Film Institute on June 14, 2000.
List breakdown
- The oldest film on the list was Sherlock, Jr. (1924). The most recent was There's Something about Mary (1998).
- Eight movies on the list starred Cary Grant: Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story, His Girl Friday, Arsenic and Old Lace, Topper, The Awful Truth, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, and She Done Him Wrong.
- Five movies on the list starred the Marx Brothers: Duck Soup, A Night at the Opera, A Day at the Races, Horse Feathers, and Monkey Business.
- Woody Allen directed and starred in five films on the list: Annie Hall, Manhattan, Take the Money and Run, Bananas, and Sleeper.
- Charlie Chaplin directed and starred in four films on the list: City Lights, Modern Times, The Great Dictator, and The Gold Rush.
- Four movies on the list starred Katharine Hepburn: Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story, Adam's Rib, and Woman of the Year.
- Mel Brooks directed three films on the list: Blazing Saddles, The Producers, and Young Frankenstein. All starred Gene Wilder, and all were in the top thirteen.
